Our Values: The Pillars of Our Commitment
HATS Mission is “Growing Relationships, Communication, and Leadership Through Adventure With Our Dads”.
Our mission is rooted in the values that define High Adventure Treks’ commitment to building relationships between Dads with their son and daughter; and to develop the next generation of great leaders for our community and country.
The pillars of our commitment are:
RELATIONSHIP: Dad-Daughter and Dad-Son relationships are forged by adversity and adventure. HATS strengthens these relationships, but nothing strengthens relationships more than the experience of overcoming hardships together. In those circumstances communication and teamwork is essential; and when a Dad and Daughter are put in a position to do this together, it takes their relationship to a new level.
COMMUNICATION: HATS adventures are structured to achieve the mission by being centered around an adventure activity such as rock climbing, canoeing, or kayaking. There are activities planned specifically to build trust and foster good communication. The word “Communication” is placed between “Relationships” and “Leadership” in the HATS mission statement to show the importance communication has in building great relationships between fathers and their students, and in the building of great leaders.
In High Adventure Treks, communication is an essential element in every adventure weekend. Our adventure activities require teamwork and good communication skills between fathers and students. Every adventure weekend ends with a dedicated time set aside for the sole purpose of fathers to talk with their students 1/1 with probing questions related to the weekend. We believe relationships are strengthened when there is good communication and there is an ability to work through sensitive subjects and situations.
LEADERSHIP: High Adventure Treks is committed to building the next generation of great leaders. We accomplish this through hands-on experience and formal training through the High Adventure Treks Wilderness Leadership Academy (WLA).
Our student leaders are trained to embrace and practice five key leadership principles:
- Inspire a Shared Vision
- Challenge the Process
- Enable Others to Act
- Model the Way
- Encourage the Heart
Our student leaders are taught and encouraged to embody four leadership behaviors to guide their actions and decisions:
- Reject Passivity
- Expect the Greater Reward
- Accept Responsibility
- Lead Courageously
ADVENTURE: At the heart of HATS is an unquenchable love for adventure and the outdoors. We believe that great relationships, communication, and leadership are all best experienced and practiced through shared adventures.
Adventures require cooperation, teamwork, and communication that creates and strengthens relationships. Adventure requires great leadership to accomplish a goal and to overcome hardships. Adversity and adventure are essential to the HATS experience.
We do this through:
- All-weather camping
- Shared outdoor adventures
- Group exercises and activities
- Mentoring
- Wilderness Leadership
- Safety Training
- Public Speaking
- Camp Directing
